The Forgotten Promise

There are more than 3,000 promises in the Bible, and probably that many or more books and devotions about these promises. The word “promise” once meant that the vow you said would be kept. Today, the word seems to have lost much of its power and means little to nothing in terms of its fulfillment.

When I was growing up, “your word is your honor” was often preached in my home. My parents would say, “It may kill you, but you will do what you said you would do.” The word “word” and “promise” are often used interchangeably in Scripture because to make a promise was to “give your word.” To give your word was the same thing as a King giving a royal edict. You are promising or guaranteeing with 100% certainty that what you are saying will happen.

You may have also heard “I’ll take your word for it.” That means that some one will choose to believe you based on the fact that they trust you.

Today, I just wanted to remind you of one of the most important promises that is often assumed and thus, overlooked in the world today. We have been promised HEAVEN.

In John 14:1-3, Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” This is a promise guaranteed.

Heaven is the most beautiful place we have ever seen. Heaven has been custom designed just for us with new colors, textures and vibrancy like we have never seen before! It’s beauty no man can fathom. There will be new tastes, new smells; all things will be new! We can’t begin to imagine what is in store for us! “No eye has seen, no ear has heard and no one’s heart has imagined all the things that God has prepared for those who love him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9

There will be no pain and no tears in heaven. There will be no more death, no more losing of loved ones, and no more grief. Revelation 21:4 says, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

It will be the perfect place for us in every way. This is the promise of God, and Paul said that every promise is a done dea. you can literally bet your life on it. “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.” 2 Corinthians 1:20

Why is this promise so important? Because it is our hope for a better tomorrow. It is our confident expectancy that there is something so much better in our future. It is the anticipation that we will see our loved ones again. It is what keeps us hanging on when we are at the end of our rope. The promise of heaven is our eternal hope; and without that, we become a hopeless people.

Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

So rejoice, encourage others with these words, and keep this promise ever before you: this world is not our home, we are just passing through. Heaven is a real place and God is waiting there for you!
