Spiritual Hunger

How often have I seen billboards, cards, and more with the phrase “Wise men still seek Him.” And I think it may be my favorite because it reminds me that it is wise for us to seek Jesus. But what does that truly mean?

In Psalm 63:8, David says “My soul follows hard after You….”

The Bible speaks often about seeking the Lord. One of my favorites is, “If you seek Him you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13) To seek Him is to want to know Him, and Him alone, above all else.

Yet in today’s modern society/modern religion, many are “saved”, but have no hunger to know Jesus. This is the core of religiosity. There is no desire to know Him more.

When you met your spouse or best friend, did you stop pursuing knowing them after you met them for the first time? Absolutely not! You began to spend time getting to know them so that they could receive the title of spouse or best friend. Jesus is a person, and salvation isn’t the end but the beginning of a long pursuit to know Him, and be able to call Him your everything!!!

We have been snared in the coils of a spurious logic which insists that if we have found Him, we need no more seek Him.

The Wise Men likewise could have been satisfied with knowing the prophecy of the Christ child coming….but that was not enough. They HAD to go see Jesus! I want to passionately encourage you and me into this deep longing after God.

I want to passionately encourage you and me into this deep longing after God.

The shallowness of Scripture interpretation , the hollowness of worship, and the lack of personal encounter with Jesus is due to the prioritizing of programs, methods, organizations and a bunch of busy activities which take up time and attention, but never satisfy the depth of our souls. He is the only eternal satisfaction.

When we get into the habit of seeking God “plus” other things, we prevent ourselves from finding Jesus in His fullness. Omit the “plus” and you will find the One who fulfills the secret deep longings of our soul….the true Prince of Peace.

This Christmas, may we not settle for facade, but a newfound longing for the real, the only, the all-satisfying Jesus, above all else. May this next year be a time of deep seeking.

Wise men still seek Him.

Merry Christmas!

Jesus came for us! Hallelujah, what a Savior!
