On March 30th, 1981, United States President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded by John Hinckley, Jr. in Washington, D.C. as he was returning to his limousine after a speaking engagement at the Washington Hilton Hotel.
In this grainy picture, you can see Secret Service Agent, Tim McCarthy, in the blue suit standing up and blocking the President. When McCarthy stepped in front of the President, he took a bullet to the chest but made a full recovery. With his arms and legs spread out, he was doing what in training is called "Getting Big". The idea is to make yourself as big as possible to cover more territory so that the President is completely covered and protected. It is a very difficult maneuver to master because it goes against everything your body and instinct would do when something like a bullet is headed your way. In that type of threat we would duck or run, but the agents must force themselves to "Get Big" and take the hits so that the President does not.
As we contemplate this Holy Week, the Passion of our Savior Jesus Christ, I was reminded through this story that Jesus "Got Big" for you and me. He took the shots that we should have taken for our sins, and bore them upon himself. He died in our place out of His love for us. While the enemy wanted to take his shots and try to destroy and kill us, Jesus stepped in front to take the hits so that we would be protected from eternal separation from God in hell. No words can describe my love, my devotion, and my humble gratitude for what Jesus did for me....for us. Hallelujah, what a Savior!
