Locking Eyes

Yesterday, I felt this sense to hurry to our church. Normally, I am the one who runs us late as I decide I can wash some dishes or fold a load of laundry real quick before I leave. But not this day. I was up and ready to go to church! (As a side note, can I just say that when you get to church early, you get to ready your soul to minister to Jesus and it makes ALL the difference than rushing in just in time for the next song???!)

As I rode to church, I began to put another coat of mascara on, when I saw a man out of the corner of my eye. Dale had stopped at a traffic light and so I was quick to start applying my mascara so I wouldn’t mess it up, and there, at that light, a man came walking across the street.

When I saw him, I looked at him intending to smile. I locked eyes with him and he smiled back and continued his walk behind our truck and to the other side of the street. Immediately, I heard the Lord say, “Give him the $20 bill in your wallet.”

I told Dale to roll his window down and to holler at the guy because the Lord had just told me to give him a $20 bill. So Dale rolled down his window and said, “Hey Buddy?”. Without seeing any money, because I was still digging in my purse for it, the man began praising the Lord.

He said, “Holy Spirit, You are real! Jesus, I can’t believe this! Wow! Oh wow! God, You are amazing! Wow!”

I handed the money to Dale and he handed it through the window and I said, “The Holy Spirit told me tor give this to you. God bless you.” He took it and continued to speak to God in amazement. He even turned back around and looked at us and shook his head in wonder.

We got to church and I realized the reason for my rush: God wanted me to cross paths with this guy.

I began to thank the Lord and worship Him for who He is and what He allowed me to be a part of. The worship team began to lead us in a song that has these lyrics: “When I lock eyes with You, I see my reflection, when I lock eyes with You, I feel Your affection.” I started talking to Jesus, just telling Him that I wanted to lock eyes with Him in deeper intimacy and the Lord said, “You did lock eyes with Me.” And I said, “When?” Jesus replied, “When you locked eyes with the man at the traffic light. That was Me.”

That was Me.

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for Me.’ Matthew 25:31-40

As we prepare to enter into the Christmas season, what opportunities will God give you to be His hands and feet? What moment will God reveal to you to give to a need? Your obedience might be life-altering, a faith-changer for someone else. Your giving might give hope to those who have vision but no way to fulfill it apart from you.

So may we begin to keep our eyes open to see who the Lord would have us lock eyes with. And may we be obedient to whatever He asks if to do.
