Out of the Box

opening ourselves up to the gift

It’s always so fun to receive a gift wrapped all up in a nice box with a bow! I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to rip into it, and get whatever is inside, out! Think about it: any box we receive is almost always intended for us to open…to get out of the box whatever is inside.

But isn’t it interesting that oftentimes, we put God IN a box, confining Him to so much less than He is? Instead of opening ourselves up to all He is, we try to cram Him into our world when He is convenient, stifling all of who He is and wants to be in our lives.

When we put God in a box:

we seek to CONTROL Him

We keep Him under our control and only take Him out of the box when we need Him. We handle most of what life throws at us, until the big crisis hits. Then, we desperately seek to let Him out of the box, but only enough to calm our anxiety, and the crisis settles down. Then, back in the box He goes. Or so we think. Or so we try.

But who is able to build a temple for Him, since the heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain Him?” 2 Chronicles 2:6

God cannot be contained. God will not be contained. He will not be controlled by anyone. He wants to be Lord of our lives in every way, not just when it is convenient.

We make God smaller than He is. We think He is big enough to calm our nerves when we have to confront someone, but He can’t handle the cancer when it comes back or when our marriages hit rock bottom. God is SO MUCH BIGGER than we can ever imagine. Should we try to understand the vastness of His greatness, we would still have just scratched the surface.

…and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.” Ephesians 1:19

If God is powerful enough to raise His SON from the grave, He can certainly take care of anything we may be going through! Never forget the greatness of His Almighty Power! Our God is BIGGER!

We believe that because we would handle a situation a certain way, or answer a prayer a certain way, that God will obviously do it the same way we would. SO NOT TRUE! If we try to humanize God, we will find ourselves very disappointed and even mad at God when things don’t work out the way we thought they should.

“”For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9

God’s thoughts and ways are very different than ours. He is far greater than our humanness. His ways are PERFECT. Every time.

we LIMIT Him

We can often be a people of extremes. We can take an extreme stance with God, also. He is either the Lion or the Lamb, but rarely both. He is either all Truth or all Grace, but rarely is He seen as both. When we lean heavily to one extreme of our perfectly balanced God, we limit Him and His work in our lives, because we miss so much of what He is doing.

The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14

Jesus is full of both grace AND truth. He is perfectly balanced, offering us both the truth on how to live an abundant life, and the grace of His power to help us live it out! What a great and awesome God!

What if God is so much BIGGER than the box you’ve put Him in? What if God wants to bust out of the box you’ve put Him in? And what if the reason we put Him in the box is because we have a misguided view of who He is?

The greatest gift we have is the gift, given through Jesus, to be in relationship with God. Maybe we need to repent of trying to box Him in, and instead, open ourselves up to knowing Him for who He really is in all His fullness, in 2017. Maybe it’s time we opened ourselves up completely to this most precious Gift.
