What’s YOUR Word?

your key to having an amazing 2017

“Happy New Year!” We will hear these words a lot in the next few days. Those words carry such positive meaning to us as they speak hope for a better tomorrow. A word can have great power in our lives. Proverbs 25:11 says, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.” We can speak powerful words to others, but God can also speak powerful words to us!

What you may not know about me is that God has given me a “Word for the Year” for several years of my life now. One year, my word was discipline. One year the word was balance. I believe God has given me those yearly words to keep me focused on what He wants to do that year in my life. Instead of me just bouncing around from one circumstance to the next, I believe God has specific areas of our lives where He wants to grow us. When I receive my WORD for the year, it keeps me focused, looking for how God will use the circumstances around me to grow me in that WORD. It brings life to me, encourages me and even excites me! I don’t dread my circumstances, but rather look for God IN my circmstances!

Without Focus, we React to Life instead of Live it.

Think about it for a minute: what would happen if you, your family, your church, or your women’s ministry had a word for the year? What if you prayed for God to give you a word for that year that became the theme for that year? Then, every decision, as far as events, Bible studies, teaching, and outreach would revolve around that word? How much more effective might you, your family, your church, or your women’s ministry be? What kind of amazing, transforming results might be seen? I would say it would be pretty powerful to see! Without focus, life can lose its purpose and focus altogether, and we can find ourselves merely existing and our churches and ministries just entertaining but not transforming.

So, what’s your word for the year? Would you dare to ask God? And then, would you dare look at your life this next year with that word in the forefront, as you read your Bible, encounter people and problems, and seek to grow?

Oh My Word, what God could do!

1)Start asking God now for your word for the year. 2)Share it here by commenting below and encourage another woman in the Living Deeper Family! 3)Then, share it with someone who can help keep your word before you this next year.

Your God-given WORD for the year can truly be life-changing as His perfectly spoken WORD for you becomes the focus of your life!

  1. 2017 will be year number 4 of choosing a specific word to keep focused upon as I walk with our Lord. I’ve been blessed through the year of “in” and discovering more and more of what it means to be “In” Christ. Then the year of “know”. Wow, intentionally spending the year “knowing” more of who God really is through His word. This past year has been amazing with “be”. I am so thankful to have spent a year focusing upon my identity as a Christian. This coming year I believe God has shown me that “worship” is the word for me. I am looking forward to seeing what He has in store. I try to encourage others to give it a try and choose a word and see what God will reveal by being intentional upon it.

One of my favorite ways to keep the word in front of me as a reminder is to purchase metal magnets at Hobby Lobby and write the word out. Also, colorful wooden blocks arranged on a table or shelf is a big hit with my children. By the end of the year I am always blessed to be surrounded by my one word. It seems my whole family gets in on the action and I continually have received gifts that highlight the word of the year; necklaces, bracelets, journals, magnets, wood burned letters, mugs, clothing, wall art, banners, etc.

I also keep one specific journal to use with the word throughout the year. I love to write during devotional times and I’m a note taker, so this is a must have for me. Lots of verses to copy and ponder.

If you haven’t yet tried this I encourage you to give it a try, I know you’ll be blessed too.

Jena, do you have a word yet for 2017? Thanks for the necklace information.

      U – unshakably
      I – intimately
      L – living
      D – devoted to Jesus

    • Barb, this is SO great! I am also amazed at how when we focus on our God-given WORD, we grow so much and see our WORD everywhere in our lives! And look how your WORD is affecting those around you!!! Thats awesome! Good for you! God is so good to be so intimate and so intentional with all of us! I love Him SO much! I DO have my WORD and I will be sharing it in my blog next week!!!! May God show Himself SO real to you as you walk with Him into even deeper waters in 2017! You are loved!

  2. Several years ago I made “my word”: humility. I asked my prayer partner to pray this word for mewhen she thought of me. Every year when January comes I evaluate and find I need to stay on this word so it has become my life word.
Rather then say I need help with my pride, I say prayer humility for me. Now isn’t that proudful? That’s why I stay with– humility!

    • HAHAHAHAHA! Tricia! I LOVE your WORD and yes, it has to become a WORD for life! It’s so hard to keep our pride in check! The epitome of Jesus Christ’s life was a life led in humility, so it i the most beautiful and profound characteristic we could pursue. Thank you for sharing this. Oh Lord keep us Your humble servants, all for Your glory!

  3. I love this. I can’t quite remember when I started having my “words” for the year, but I love that God gives me a word each new year. Last year He gave me the word “Focus.” I know He was asking me to stay focused on Him last year. That word seemed to pop up EVERY time I turned around!I have to say the Devil seemed to work overtime on me to keep me distracted and keep me focused on everything but Jesus! I will be praying for my new word this year. I feel like my word should be “Focus” again this year because I didn’t do a very good job with it last year, but I will pray and see what God has to say about it. Please pray for me as I seek God’s word for 2017. Thank you!

    • Mandy, I am SO with ya! FOCUS was my WORD for several years as I allow “life” to so often distract me! I think maintaining FOCUS on what is best verses trying to do it all is a constant learning curve fro all of us!! Holy Spirit, You are our counselor who guides us into truth. I ask that You would reveal to Mandy the WORD You would have her focus on for the year as she grows up more and more into Christlikeness. Thank You that You will be found as Mandy seeks you with all her heart. In Jesus’ name. Let me know what He tells you!!!
