This past weekend, the Living Deeper Lead Team went away to be together and grow together as we prepare for what God has next for us in ministry. We went to a dear friend’s lake house not too far from home. When we got there, we noticed that some of the lights were blinking and some were going from bright to dim. Soon, various bulbs were bursting, so we knew something was up. We turned everything off and spent the rest of the night by candlelight.
The next morning, I felt like the Lord was leading me to go outside. As I walked and followed the electrical lines, I noticed one particular line that was completely severed. I knew that couldn’t be good. We called the power company and they soon arrived and told us what had happened: “A squirrel chewed through the wire. That means that the wire that allows the flow of power from your house to the transformer is severed. That’s why you are having so many problems.”
That statement. Think about how that applies to our spiritual lives.
We are the Housing of the Holy Spirit. If we know Jesus as our Savior and Lord, the Holy Spirit lives in us. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.”
God is our Transformer. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 says, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His image with intensifying glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
The Flow of Power is Powerful! Powerful enough to defeat the enemy: Luke 10:19 says, “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Powerful enough to overcome every giant and mountain you face: Mark 11:23 says, “Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.” Powerful enough to empower you to be a witness to others of His amazing love: Acts 1:8 says, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere–in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
In Order for Transformation to Take Place, there must be a Constant Flow of Power from the Transformer to your House
We are all in desperate need for our souls to be transformed. Our soul is the housing of our thoughts, that attach to our feelings, that determine our will (behavior). True transformation within our souls can only take place as we are connected to the Transformer, Himself. We have the Holy Spirit within, but we still must allow Him to work within us. We still must give Him access to our souls. We must keep the flow of God’s present-working power going. How?
Prayer is the Wire that Maintains Connection. Psalm 145:18 says, “The LORD is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” It is just amazing to me that we get to have a vibrant, relationship with God through Jesus Christ! How incredible! The truth is that we can talk with Jesus 24/7 in unbroken communication. It is this constant, ongoing conversation that keeps us connected to the One who transforms our lives.
So based on this experience/example God gave me, for you and me to think about today, I am prompted to ask these questions:
~ What people or circumstances in your life cause you to get disconnected from the Father during your day? What are the “squirrels” in your life that chew through your connection to His power?
~ What people or things in your life need to be severed so that you can stay connected to the Father?
What if we stopped getting severed from the power of God and started severing ourselves from the things that keep us from God?
Selah. Pause for a minute and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal answers to these questions.
For me, I seek to make it a habit to pray before I have any conversation with anyone through a phone call, a meeting, an email, or even a text. I am basically inviting the Lord to be a part of it, and to guide it. I also seek to ask for His help in everything I do, from answering emails, to cleaning house, to running errands, to work. And I try to be a person who is always speaking words of thanksgiving to Him for every blessing and every hard time, knowing that He works it all for my good. In this, I am including God in my day and keeping our communication going. When a person or circumstance tends to lure me away, I ask the Holy Spirit to prompt me to call to Him. And if I find myself feeling “distant” or “disconnected”, I quickly jump back in, knowing that Jesus understands how difficult it can sometimes be, and gratefully welcomes me with no judgement, but rather, love and grace.
Are you finding the power of Christ in your life dimming or blinking? Maybe your prayer life is getting “chewed on” or has been severed. Today, you can confess that to the Lord and ask Him to help you walk with Him more consistently throughout your day. Maybe the Spirit has revealed that certain people or circumstances need to be severed in order to keep you connected to the Father. Ask Him to help you know how to separate yourself from those people or things so your fellowship can remain steady throughout your day.
God is always present. But it is our awareness of His continual presence that brings power into our moments, and transforms us into His likeness.
