The Missing Piece of Love

There is one key element of love that many of us are missing.

The love of God is so vast, we could spend a year delving deep into its meaning. but one characteristic of love that is so needed today is a love that identifies. Think about that:

It emotionally understands and connects with the object of its love

to the point of getting involved.

If someone came to you and told you that one of your children would die unless they got your blood, you would give it in a heartbeat! Even if they said it would cost you your life! Because of the depth of love you have for your child, you would identify with the need of your child, and gladly give your life. You hurt because they hurt. You are sad because they are sad. You want them to live because they want to live!
Jesus’ love for you is the same. He identified with our plight. He was the only way for us to be free from the penalty of sin. Him giving His life would be the only way to save us from our sin sickness. And so He gladly gave His life so we could have life abundant and full.
Hebrews 12:2 says, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Jesus identified with where you were and gladly gave Himself for you, because of love.
Why is this so important for us to be reminded? Because if we are going to go into deeper waters with God and take others with us, we are going to have to ask the Holy Spirit to give us a love that identifies with those He brings our way to disciple. They may be vastly different from us, but we must learn to lovingly listen and identify with where they are. It is only then that we will gladly give of ourselves sacrificially for the sake of another.
As you enjoy your weekend, may you find yourself going throughout your day with a grateful heart to God for identifying with you and sacrificing His life so you could truly live.
Take a moment today to identify with those around you. What’s going on with your husband? Your children? Your co-worker? Your friend? Ask the Holy Spirit to help you identify with them and then offer them a loving response.
